Venom: Let There Be Carnage is an upcoming fantasy superhero film and a sequel to 2018’s Venom, starring Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, and more. After several disappointing delays, the official trailer has finally released, along with its release date – September 24, 2021.
Set in the same universe as the Spider-Man films, Venom: Let There Be Carnage continues the story of Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), a journalist who becomes infected by an alien symbiote, transforming him into a hulking monstrosity known as Venom. Although the previous Venom film wasn’t the biggest hit with critics, it was one of the top 10 highest-grossing films in 2018, turning a profit and making a splash in the box office. As the title suggests, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will introduce the supervillain Carnage, potentially evening the odds as two symbiotes battle for supremacy.
The Cast and Crew of Venom: Let There Be Carnage
While Venom: Let There Be Carnage features many of the same actors as the previous film, a brand new creative team is helming this sequel. The film is directed by Andy Serkis, a remarkable creative mind who is best known for his acting prowess in roles such as Caesar in Planet of the Apes and Gollum in The Lord of the Rings. Andy Serkis is replacing Ruben Fleischer, the director of the previous Venom film.
The screenplay and overall story are also being passed to different hands, with returning writer Kelly Marcel taking the lead on the Let There Be Carnage script. Of all the criticisms surrounding the previous Venom film, issues with the movie’s pacing and plot were the most persistent. Many fans felt that the movie lacked the serious and violent tone that the Venom character is known for, an issue that will hopefully be resolved in the sequel. Based on the first movie’s success, Venom: Let There Be Carnage should have the resources to produce a more consistent and serious tone or at least one that aligns better with fan expectations.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage Plot Details
Currently, not much is known about the exact plot of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but fan speculation and the release of the brand new trailer has enough information to get a good idea. The sequel will again focus on Eddie Brock, who has become more accustomed to his life after spending the first movie grappling with his symbiotic infection. Abandoning his life as a photojournalist behind, Eddie does his best to keep the streets clean of crime and suffering, utilizing his hefty powers as the slithering Venom. However, his power is soon matched, as other test subjects become imbued with varying symbiote abilities.
Based on the end-credit scene from Venom and the Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer, it’s clear that serial killer Cletus Kassady (played by Woody Harrelson) will be the main antagonist in the film. In the comics, Kassady is overtaken by one of the other symbiotes that have crash-landed on Earth, resulting in the birth of Carnage. Often seen as the most violent and destructive symbiote of them all, Carnage does his name justice, going on a terrifying rampage after escaping from prison.
The trailer also shows quick glimpses of other test subjects, teasing the appearance of lesser-known symbiotes like Scream, Toxin, and others. Actor Tom Hardy has confirmed his involvement in an upcoming third Venom film, which will most likely feature these additional symbiotes and a potential cross-over with the Spider-Man movies. While the exact plot details of Venom: Let There Be Carnage are currently unknown, you can safely bet that Eddie Brock/Venom will face off against Cletus Kassady/Carnage as the city descends into chaos.
Will Venom: Let There Be Carnage Be Good?
Fans have their hopes high for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, even after the ho-hum reception of the first movie. While Venom is popular enough, the villainous Carnage has played a significant role in the overarching story, with many fans considering him one of the best supervillains in the world of comics. Hopefully, the new direction and smaller writing staff will result in a cleaner and more focused project, eschewing the “family-friendly” tone that Marvel-based films are known for.
However, it’s best to go into Venom: Let There Be Carnage with managed expectations. Based on the trailer, the sequel seems to be keeping a comedic tone, with Venom offering moments of slapstick humour. While this didn’t work as well in the first movie, it might be necessary to balance out the more depraved plot points revolving around Cletus Kassady. That said, the movie will most likely maintain a PG-13 rating, despite fans pleading for an R-rated film with ample blood and gore. Simply put, if you enjoyed the first Venom film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage should offer an equally entertaining ride. We won’t have to wait long to find out, as Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be hitting theatres on September 24, 2021.
