The Biggest Summer Blockbusters of 2022

1. Jurassic World Dominion

Set three years after the events of the previous movie, Jurassic World Fallen KingdomDominion sees returning heroes Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) grappling with a world where dinosaurs roam free.

Fans can also expect to see some characters from the classic Jurassic Park films pop up as well, including Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neil) and Dr. Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum). We can’t wait to see the dinosaur frenzy unfold when Jurassic World Dominion comes out on June 10.

2. Lightyear

Prepare for another wildly imaginative adventure from Pixar Animation Studios, as Lightyear, a spin-off of the Toy Story series, is blasting into your galaxy this summer! Written and directed by Angus MacLane, this intriguing family-friendly picture explores the career of Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans), a fictional astronaut that led to a line of iconic toys.

Expect a mind-bending sci-fi romp as Buzz must figure out a way to return home after accidentally time-traveling 62 years into the future. Will this movie be able to strike a balance between serious space-based action and Pixar’s general lighthearted tone? Audiences can find out when Lightyear hits theaters on June 17.

3. Elvis

Musician biopics have been hot as of late, with films like 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody and 2019’s Rocketman standing out among the crowd. This summer, Elvis looks to achieve the same level of success as it tells the moving, true-life story of the “King of Rock and Roll”, Elvis Presley (Austin Butler).

The film is being directed by Baz Luhrmann, who most recently directed 2013’s The Great Gatsby, a glitzy and glamorous adaptation that garnered multiple Academy Awards. If anything, Elvis has tons of potential, so we’re interested to see how it will turn out. Rock fans can get their fill of this iconic tale of music when Elvis releases on June 24.

4. Minions: Rise of Gru

Pixar isn’t the only studio releasing a high-energy animated film this summer, as the Minions movie finally receives a sequel in the form of Minions: Rise of Gru. Set immediately after the events of the first Minions movie, this sequel follows a young Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) as he attempts to join a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6.

However, when the rest of the minions get involved, things go array, sending them on an epic quest. If you enjoyed the loud and ridiculous antics of the Despicable Me franchise, you’ll likely love Minions: Rise of Gru when it comes out on July 1.

5. Thor: Love and Thunder

Without a doubt, one of the biggest summer blockbusters of 2022 is Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth film in the Thor franchise and another entry in “Phase 4” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Taika Waititi, the same director of 2017’s Thor: RagnorakLove and Thunder will assuredly contain vibrant visuals, quirky comedy, and some surprisingly touching moments.

This epic superhero sequel sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) working on his mental and physical health after the events of Avengers: Endgame, but is drawn back into the fold when a powerful villain threatens to destroy all the gods of the universe. We’re sure that Thor: Love and Thunder will continue to expand the MCU in some exciting ways when it finally hits theaters on July 8.

6. NOPE

NOPE is the next horrifying vision from the twisted mind of writer/director Jordan Peele, who previously crafted award-winning films like 2017’s Get Out and 2019’s Us. Although plot details are scarce, the movie supposedly details a small rural town in California that endures an alien invasion.

However, like Get Out and Us, there’s likely a deeper mystery to be had, packed with societal commentary and mind-bending revelations. NOPE is easily one of the most anticipated horror movies of the year and we absolutely can’t wait to dig in when it hits theaters on July 22.
